Garage door openers are one of the most important parts of your home and they are all extremely under-appreciated. They’re simple mechanisms that seem to last for a very long time, meaning they are a very wise investment. The average lifespan of an opener is around 10 to 15 years which means in some cases, it lasts as long as your garage door!
If you decide to keep hold if your opener for that long, there should be a few signs that you need to purchase a new one – but why should you get rid of your current one and upgrade?
Older garage doors are more susceptible to thieves as it is locked by the same fixed code each time, meaning potential intruders could sit outside your garage and attempt to break in. New openers use a similar sort of technology but each time the door is locked, the code changes – this is known as a ‘rolling code’ feature which is much more secure.
Since 1993, all garage door openers have been required by law to have a certain safety features which reverses the motion of the garage door if something crosses its path. This prevents children, pets or elderly people from becoming seriously injured by an opening or closing garage door.
On either side of the garage door opening, around 6 inches from the floor, there will be a sensor the size of a pea which will improve safety. If your current opener doesn’t have this feature or has stopped working, we highly recommend you get a new one.
