Most likely reasons your garage door won’t open or close

It’s a horrible moment when your garage door refuses to open or close, and anyone who has a garage has most likely experienced this issue. With it being a way in and out your home, it is important that you know why it isn’t working – so here at ABi Garage Doors Ltd, we have come up with the most likely reasons why your garage door won’t work.

Photo-eye blocked

The photo-eye on your garage door is a safety feature which prevents the door from closing on something when it is in its path. It consists of two sensors on either side of the door, and if either of these are covered with dust, it will lead to the sensors not working.

Broken springs and cables

A broken spring or cable are the most common reason why your garage door won’t work. If you hear a loud noise sounding like a gunshot whilst your garage door is in operation, it will be one of the cables snapping. To fix, we recommend calling a professional rather than doing it yourself.

Problems with the remote

Possibly the most obvious reasons your garage door might not be working are down to the remote, here are a few:

  • Remote out of range
  • Dead remote batteries
  • Remote receiving sensor blocked
  • Remote needs reprogramming

Track out of alignment

Your garage door runs along a metal track to make it operate smoothly, and if it isn’t aligned, it prevents the garage door from running. If you can see bends in the track in the rail or gaps between rollers and the track, you will need to have it looked at.

If you’ve checked all these problems and it STILL doesn’t work, then you will most likely need a new garage door. Here at ABi Garage Doors Ltd, we provide top of the range garage doors, so give one of our friendly team a call on 01142 055151 and they will be happy to help.
